- Beers n Gears Slay the Dragon
Midday on Saturday the 18th June all the Beers n Gears assemble (with the exception of one of our riders who had to drop out due to circumstances beyond their control) to load up their cars and start the intrepid journey to Wales for the Dragon Ride 2022 the journey itself was quite pleasant, until we got to the Severn Bridge and then the weather gods of Wales let us know that we were in Wales, as it lashed it down.
Somehow, we all managed to get to the hotel all at the same time (which is Miricale in itself).
We all go off to our respective rooms and then subsequently compare rooms then the obvious happens someone leaves their key in the room and locks themself out.. (Don’t worry Brad we won’t let on it was you!)Then off to the pub for a few beers and dinner, dish out a load of safety pins and meander to our rooms to tinker with the bikes and then off to bed..
Alarms all set for 6:45 ready for breakfast, however some of us couldn’t sleep and decided to message the group and a few of us met up for breakfast before the alarms went off.
then the reloading of the bikes on/in to the cars, set the car alarms off continually – (i’m sure the hotel guests loved that, sorry people) then off to the start.
The weather gods were on our side so far with the sun shining and a moderate breeze and after much deliberation as to what we should wear for the ride we unloaded our bikes and made our way to the dragon village which was set in Margam Park with a backdrop of the Welsh hills and a grand building and dear running in the hills and 1000’s of bikes.
Our time had then come to get to the start line and then listen to the announcements and essential information (which honestly could have been Charly Browns teacher talking). some of us were genuinely excited about what was ahead of us, whilst others were thinking why the hell am i here..
Then the horn goes and were off……..
The route was amazing with stunning views of the Welsh valley countryside and wandering sheep the mountain climbs were tough but when you got to the top the views and the thrill of the downhills were something else which really did make up for the pain and strain of climbing. The last few Km’s were quite boring as we had to travel back on a dual carriageway but with the end in sight it soon passed and we all stuck together and after 4hours and 35 mins we crossed the line together with the announcer calling out “Well done Beers n Gears Sevenoaks, love the kit gents” we then collected our well-earned medal, food n drink and then soaked up the experience and reflected on the ride.
We then loaded up the bikes on the cars and then made our way home..
Thank you to you all who supported us and donated to West Kent Mind at the time of this write up we raised just over £750 (including Gift Aid) and we’re sure there is more to come..
